Maruti has finally launched their Baleno replacement with the launch of Maruti SX4 sedan. The car has been launched in two variants both featuring a 1.6 liter petrol engine. The company has not revealed any plans to launch a diesel variant for the time being.
The Maruti SX4 VXi has been priced at Rs 6.18 lakh while the higher variant ZXi would cost Rs 6.89 lakh. Maruti also has a higher end version of Maruti SX4 ZXi priced at Rs 7.24 lakh.
Maruti SX4 has been powered with an engine with 102 BHP which is based on the Suzuki’s advanced, next generation M-series global engine technology.
The company claims that the 16-valve, DOHC, 1.6 liter engine powering the Maruti SX4 would meet the stringent Bharat stage-IV emission norms. Maruti further says that the engine can be modified to meet the forthcoming Euro-V emissions norms too, if needed.
The pricing of the car puts it in direct competition to Honda City which is the most popular model in this segment. Other vehicles in this segment include Hyundai Verna, Chevrolet Aveo and Ford Fiesta.
I personally believe that the company is making a mistake trying to compete with City on the price point. They could have launched it at competitive prices to generate more sales and take away customers from cheap Sedans in this segment.
